 The BackPack Program


The Food Bank of Santa Barbara County and the Food Coalition of San Luis Obispo County believe that no child should go hungry. To alleviate hunger and address the consequences of poor nutrition, both food banks have implemented the Backpack Program. This program is designed for children who participate in school lunch programs and after-school activities, but run the risk of being hungry on the weekends when these traditional programs are not available. 

Every Friday, backpacks filled with ready to eat foods, including fresh fruits and vegetables, are delivered to a food bank partnering agency for distribution to the children in the greatest need. On Monday, the children return the backpacks and the process of assembling the food and preparing the backpacks starts again.

The Backpack Program ensures that nutritious food, rather than hunger, becomes a regular part of a child's daily life.
